Blizzard Entertainment has announced Diablo 5 is in development, a decision driven by the need for significant structural changes that would have been difficult to implement within a Diablo 4 expansion. The studio aims to tell the darkest story yet in the series, marking the return of Diablo himself.

Speaking at BlizzCon, senior production director Tiffany Wat and executive producer Matt Zitterman explained that the conceptual phase for Diablo 5 involved a deep dive into player motivations and desires for the franchise. This analysis, alongside an assessment of Diablo 4's strengths and areas for improvement, informed the ambition for the new game. "It really started by looking at who our players are," Zitterman stated. "Who are Diablo players? Why are they playing Diablo? What do they want out of a Diablo game?"

The ambition for Diablo 5 became clear early in development, leading the team to conclude that a full sequel was necessary to achieve their vision. "We needed to make some more deeply structural changes to the way the game works, changes that are just frankly hard to do in an expansion," Zitterman said. "Again, it's all about figuring out what the best way is to make the best Diablo game we can for players. Diablo is the main villain. Diablo is the guy that we want to tell a real story about. We want to tell a story that's on par with--and hopefully exceeds--the story we told with Lilith and Mephisto."

To properly focus on the titular demon's narrative arc, the developers felt he needed his own game. The early announcement of Diablo 5 is intended to allow Blizzard to incorporate player feedback and make crucial refinements throughout the development process. "If we didn't announce now and we kind of held back until we were much further along in development, at that point, it's much harder to take that feedback and use it to make those really important changes and refinements to the game throughout development," Zitterman explained.

Diablo 5 is currently targeting a 2029 release, which would place it six years after the launch of Diablo 4. Further details regarding combat, character classes, and enemy factions are expected to be revealed in the future.
