Diablo 5 is set to plunge players into an even more desolate Sanctuary, with the Lord of Terror having already conquered the land. Executive producer Matt Zitterman described the world as a post-apocalyptic setting where human strongholds are gone and survivors are scattered. This grim vision aims to double down on the dark atmosphere established in Diablo 4, with the landscape itself reflecting humanity's fall.

"We need to tell a story of this apocalyptic Sanctuary," Zitterman stated, explaining that the team envisioned the world in layers: the past, present, and future. The past represents the stories of humanity's struggle and ultimate failure against Diablo's conquest. These narratives will be told through environmental storytelling, showcasing vignettes of survival efforts that ultimately failed. The metaphor of a forest fire was used to describe the state of Sanctuary, with certain areas representing the aftermath of a devastating blaze where the landscape is permanently altered by demonic invasion.

These ravaged zones are contrasted with areas of active invasion. Zitterman detailed the role of Dread Commanders, lieutenants in Diablo's army, who roam the world and control different territories. When a Dread Commander occupies a region, it becomes an active invasion zone, signifying the future of Sanctuary if players do not succeed in driving Diablo out. This ongoing conflict embodies the future of Sanctuary, perpetually under threat.

Despite the overwhelming bleakness, a glimmer of hope persists. Senior production director Tiffany Wat explained that the game's narrative will focus on a quest to reclaim a lost legacy, empowering players to become humanity's saviors. Unlike previous titles where the player character might not have had as personal a stake, in Diablo 5, the player is the heir to Westmarch, fighting to reclaim their land from Diablo.

The journey begins with the player character on the run, encountering and forming a small caravan of survivors. As players progress through the campaign, they will meet and recruit other survivors, expanding their caravan. This growing community is visualized through an expanding campfire and wagon circle, with new members like jewelers or blacksmiths bringing their own means of transport. Wat likened this progression to the "Oregon Trail" metaphor, where making progress and growing the caravan signifies hope and the potential for eventual victory against the darkness.

Blizzard plans to incorporate beloved elements from past Diablo titles into Diablo 5, which is slated for a 2029 launch. Players can anticipate the familiar loot grind, including the pursuit of set items, and with a variety of classes available, the game aims to provide ample reasons for players to embark on multiple playthroughs in Sanctuary.
