Blizzard Entertainment has announced that Jennifer Hepler, a notable former BioWare developer, has joined the team working on Diablo 5 as its narrative director. Hepler is recognized for her significant contributions to the first three games in the Dragon Age series, where she played a key role in developing the lore and characters, particularly those related to the dwarven heritage of Thedas.

Hepler's involvement with Diablo 5 is seen as a significant addition to the game's narrative potential. Her previous work at BioWare includes extensive writing for Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age: Inquisition. Public perception of Dragon Age 2 has also shifted positively over time, despite initial criticisms regarding its scope and combat. Following her departure from BioWare in 2013, Hepler contributed to other game projects and wrote about women in the video game industry.

At BlizzCon 2026, Hepler teased her approach to the narrative in Diablo 5, stating that the player's connection to the world and their own story will be a central focus. "it's going to be a very core part of the story, and we want to really let the player feel like it is their own story to shape," she explained.

The narrative of Diablo 5 is set in a world where the titular antagonist has triumphed over the western continent. Players will join a caravan of characters united in their fight against these oppressive forces. Hepler noted that the caravan concept in Diablo 5 draws inspiration from her experience with traditional role-playing games, likening it to the "campsite" where players could interact with followers in titles like Baldur's Gate or Dragon Age.

While these companions in Diablo 5 will not have the same skill progression or customization as in Dragon Age, they will possess distinct personalities, encouraging player engagement. "They're not going to be Dragon Age followers where you level up their skills and give them clothing and stuff, but they will be followers with personalities and coming back to them. So I think that my experience with traditional RPGs has definitely been a strength in building that out," Hepler told Polygon.

Diablo 5 is slated for release in the spring of 2029. BioWare is currently focused on the development of the next installment in the Mass Effect series, and no new Dragon Age titles have been officially confirmed at this time.
