Blizzard has offered a first look at Diablo 5, targeting a Spring 2029 release. The studio revealed three playable classes, two of which, the Monk and Demon Hunter, are returning from Diablo 3. A new class, the Plague Knight, has also been detailed. These characters are described as 'walking death,' spreading disease and consuming it to gain power, drawing comparisons to Death Knights from other Blizzard titles.
The game's setting, Sanctuary, has been devastated by Diablo himself. Instead of traditional towns, players will manage a wandering caravan of survivors, who will act as vendors and companions. Among the potential allies are a former Sister of the Sightless Eye and a treasure goblin disillusioned by the state of the world.
Diablo 5's world will be procedural, meaning its terrain, monsters, and points of interest will change dynamically due to Diablo's influence. The game's inventory and itemization systems are being designed with Diablo 2 in mind, aiming for items that are 'readable, memorable, and worth chasing across hundreds of hours.' Item sizes will affect inventory space, and item sets, runes, and runewords will all make a return.
While Diablo 5 is in early development, Blizzard has not forgotten Diablo 4. The Amazon class will be released as standalone DLC in the first half of next year, and seasonal content will continue. Diablo 4's Season 15, Hell's Legacy, begins September 15 and will feature Deckard Cain, tasking players with confronting remnants of the Prime Evils.
