Blizzard has revealed a number of details about Diablo 5, which is currently in early development and slated for a 2029 release. While the game was a highlight of the recent BlizzCon, the developer has been coy regarding how its multiplayer features will compare to Diablo 4, which has been described as an ARPG with an MMO skin.
Senior game director Joe Shely confirmed that Diablo 5 will support both solo and multiplayer gameplay, allowing players to experience all content with friends. However, specific details about the structure of this multiplayer experience will be disclosed closer to the game's launch. This ambiguity is particularly notable given Diablo 5's confirmation of returning procedural generation for its world, a feature similar to Diablo 3's dungeons, which randomizes layouts upon each entry.
Blizzard emphasized that regions within Sanctuary will be altered on every visit, meaning each player might encounter a different version of the game world. This approach to world design could present challenges for implementing a system akin to Diablo 4's MMO-lite features. Furthermore, Diablo 5 will not feature traditional towns as hubs. Instead, the narrative will follow a caravan of survivors journeying across Sanctuary, potentially making player interaction a more complex endeavor.
Blizzard has committed to providing regular development updates for Diablo 5 beginning in 2027 and has expressed openness to feedback, suggesting that some aspects of the game may evolve before its release.
