Diablo 5 is slated for a spring 2029 release and will introduce fundamental changes to the series, including procedurally-generated dungeons, a return to Diablo 2-style loot systems, and more classes than any previous entry. Blizzard developers shared these details at BlizzCon 2026, emphasizing that the game is still a work in progress.
The sequel is set 100 years after Diablo 4, in a Sanctuary ravaged by the demon Diablo. Unlike in Diablo 4, Diablo will be a full character throughout the campaign, which will focus on restoring the western continent and the iconic location of Westmarch. The developers noted that many of the changes are a response to player feedback on Diablo 4 and its competitors.
Diablo 5 will feature procedurally-generated dungeons and open-world regions that will shift with each playthrough. Traditional towns will be replaced by a traveling caravan of NPCs, with sidequests originating from these characters. The returning Demon Hunter and Monk classes will be joined by new additions, including the Plague Knight, a heavily armored class focused on spreading disease. The game is planned to launch with a greater number of classes than all previous Diablo titles combined.
The loot system is also undergoing significant changes. Items will have tiered complexity, beginning simple and evolving as players progress. Belts and set items are making a comeback, and items will occupy multiple inventory slots based on their type, reminiscent of Diablo 2. The development team is also exploring items that require specific stat thresholds, another nod to Diablo 2.
Blizzard plans to provide regular updates on Diablo 5's development starting next year, indicating a commitment to incorporating player feedback throughout the ongoing development process.
