Blizzard is returning to procedurally generated overworlds for Diablo 5, a significant departure from Diablo 4's static open-world design. The decision aims to address community feedback and provide a more dynamic sense of discovery in the upcoming action RPG.

Franchise executive producer Matt Zitterman acknowledged that Diablo 4's static world, while facilitating its online focus, limited the feeling of exploration to a single playthrough. "Players had so much fun in Diablo 4 unfurling the fog of war... That was an experience that was kind of one and done, right? But players want that. They want that sense of constant discovery," Zitterman explained during a Q&A at BlizzCon 2026. "One of the reasons that we returned to the procedural world for Diablo 5 is because we saw that it was this great, amazing experience to explore what the full world of the eastern continent looked like in Diablo 4, but that was an experience that you really only were able to have once, and we wanted to be able to provide that as a more constant experience."

Diablo 2 and Diablo 3 both featured procedurally generated outdoor environments that connected dungeons. Diablo 5 will continue this trend, with both its overworld and dungeons employing procedural generation through distinct 'tiles.' These tiles can vary in appearance, enemy encounters, and treasure placements. The generation will also adapt based on the influence of Diablo's Dread Commanders in specific regions, leading to varied encounters like a ruined church appearing differently depending on the area's current state.

Furthermore, Diablo 5 will include an overlay map feature from its launch. This contrasts with Diablo 4's initial absence of such a feature, which was later added. Game director Joe Shely confirmed the inclusion, noting that a mini-map would be less practical for a randomly generated world.

Addressing concerns about potential repetitiveness in procedurally generated content, common in some contemporary games, the developers expressed confidence in their approach. Shely stated that Blizzard is building a substantial amount of content and is focused on striking a balance between giving areas distinct identities and incorporating elements that allow for variation. "It's intentional," he said, emphasizing that the generation process is not simply random assembly of assets.

Zitterman added that the technology for procedural generation has been refined since Diablo 3, and more details about its implementation in Diablo 5 are expected closer to the game's projected 2029 launch.
