Blizzard is planning a notable shift in how players experience power progression in Diablo 5, with a revised approach to level-scaling inspired by Diablo 2. This adjustment aims to address player feedback regarding the sensation of growing stronger, a feeling that has been somewhat diluted in Diablo 4 and Diablo 3.
Game director Joe Shely explained in a BlizzCon roundtable that the team is aware of the core Diablo fantasy: becoming progressively more powerful. He noted that when enemies scale automatically alongside the player, it can diminish the satisfaction of leveling up and acquiring new gear. "You've filled the experience bar, you get stronger, you should feel awesome now: a wave of light pulses out from you, a bunch of monsters die," Shely stated, highlighting how automatic scaling can interfere with this crucial player experience.
While Shely did not detail the specifics of Diablo 5's new level-scaling system, he confirmed that Blizzard intends to take "a somewhat different approach" than the one implemented in its predecessors. This indicates a willingness to modify a system that has been a staple of the last two Diablo titles.
This move towards Diablo 2-inspired mechanics extends beyond level-scaling. Blizzard has previously indicated that Diablo 5's itemization and loot systems, including more complex inventory management, are also drawing heavily from the beloved Diablo 2. These design choices suggest a broader aim to create a more challenging and rewarding experience, potentially aligning with the ARPG design philosophies seen in titles like Path of Exile.
Players looking forward to Diablo 5 will need patience, as the game is not slated for release until spring 2029.
