Domhnall Gleeson, who portrayed General Hux in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, has expressed a desire to explore the character's internal struggles more thoroughly. Gleeson stated that he would have preferred to delve deeper into the "bitterness" at the core of Hux, rather than his character’s trajectory culminating in a surprising twist and swift demise in The Rise of Skywalker.
Hux appeared in all three sequel films, evolving from a subordinate to Kylo Ren to a secret Rebel spy. This late-game change of allegiance ultimately led to his death, discovered and executed by Richard E. Grant's character.
"Speaking genuinely, it would have been nice to go into the real bitterness at the heart of him," Gleeson told Liv Marks. "In a quiet way, just to find a couple of quiet moments with him, where it's not performative, where the real danger of him comes across. A kicked dog will end up attacking someone, and he is a kicked dog by the end of that sort of stuff."
Gleeson also commented on his performances, noting that his large speech to the First Order troops was a relatively easy scene due to his understanding of the character. However, he found that his interactions with Adam Driver's Kylo Ren required more in-the-moment adjustments to ensure the dynamic between them felt balanced.
While Hux's role concluded in The Rise of Skywalker, there remains a possibility for further exploration of the character within the broader Star Wars universe through books, comics, or video games.
