Tru Blu Games has announced Don Bradman Cricket Jr., a new entry in the cricket video game genre. Developed by Big Ant Studios, the game appears to be taking a departure from realistic simulation with its cartoonish, Roblox-esque visuals, aiming for a more arcade-style experience.
This approach echoes Big Ant Studios' 2018 title, Big Bash Boom, which also featured exaggerated character models and focused on accessible, family-friendly gameplay. While Big Bash Boom was met with a mixed reception, described as "a fun, flashy, family-friendly cricket game that’s a bit too light on features to make it a must buy," it remains a standalone experiment for the studio, which has otherwise focused on its simulation-style Cricket series.
Don Bradman Cricket Jr. arrives eight years after Big Bash Boom and notably lacks official team or player licenses. The only officially recognized figure is Don Bradman himself, who will be available as an unlockable character. Players can apparently unlock him by completing a specific in-game challenge, which will also grant access to a bonus mini-game replicating Bradman's unique training exercise of hitting a golf ball into a water tank with a stump.
The game is set to feature unlicensed tournaments and a challenge mode. It will also include split-screen support for two players. Developers have stated that the batting experience will ensure "no two shots are ever truly the same," though the announcement trailer seemingly displays repetitive animations.
Don Bradman Cricket Jr. is slated for release on PC, PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, and Nintendo eShop. A specific release date has not yet been provided, but Tru Blu Games indicates it will be available soon. The game appears to be targeting a younger audience or those seeking a more casual take on the sport.
