French game developer Don't Nod, known for its work on the Life is Strange series, is facing significant financial challenges that could impact its future operations. The company has indicated a material uncertainty regarding its ability to continue as a going concern beyond January 31, 2027, due to a substantial decrease in operating revenue.
In 2024, Don't Nod's titles Jusant and Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden performed below expectations, leading to a pause in development for two other projects. A subsequent layoff occurred in 2025 after the release of Lost Records failed to meet financial targets. The developer's third-person adventure game, Aphelion, also did not provide the anticipated financial turnaround.
Don't Nod reported a 56% year-on-year decrease in operating revenue, citing "systemic pressures in the video game industry, characterized by highly selective financing." This decline resulted in a €3.5 million drop in sales for the first half of 2026. The sales figures were impacted by revenue recognition from titles like Bloom and Rage available on services such as PS Plus and Game Pass, initial sales of Aphelion, and back catalog performance. Concurrently, development costs increased by €2.6 million due to an unannounced collaboration with Netflix for a narrative game based on a major Netflix intellectual property.
To address this precarious financial situation, Don't Nod is initiating a strategic restructuring. The company plans to refocus its operations in France around a single production line, consolidating expertise to expedite the launch of new projects. This move involves a significant workforce adjustment that may lead to the reduction of up to 90 positions. The board of directors has approved this restructuring plan, and negotiations with the company's union are underway.
This news comes amid a challenging period for the broader video game industry, marked by widespread layoffs and financial instability. The situation at Don't Nod highlights the ongoing pressures faced by developers in the current market landscape.
