A fan-developed PC recompile of Donkey Kong 64 is in the works, aiming for a high-quality experience with modern features. The development team behind this project has publicly criticized a rival effort that is reportedly using AI-powered "vibe coding" to create its version of the classic N64 platformer, stating that this approach results in a subpar product.
A Modernized Classic
The upcoming Donkey Kong 64: Recompiled is being built using Wiseguy's N64 recomp tool, which translates original N64 game software to run on PC. This fan project promises widescreen support, high framerates, 4K resolution options, updated minigames designed for "lagless gameplay," minimal input delay, and mod support. The developers have emphasized that the recompiled version will not include any original game assets and will instead require users to provide their own copy of the game, a common practice that helps these fan projects avoid legal action from copyright holders.
This project is being helmed by the same group responsible for the popular Donkey Kong 64 Randomizer mod, bringing significant experience with the game's backend code. The team explicitly stated their intention to avoid AI-assisted development, a practice they refer to as "vibe coding."
Criticism of AI Development
Developer theballaam96, speaking on behalf of the Donkey Kong 64: Recompiled team, shared concerns about a competing project. "Unfortunately, the [DK64] recomp comes with a special case on that we have a competitor who is vibe coding their way through, and doing a very poor job of it," they explained. The team's decision to announce their project early was partly to distinguish their quality efforts from what they perceive as a poorly executed AI-driven alternative. "As such, we want to get our intention out that we’re doing a recomp of actually good quality before our competitor releases their poorly made one and some infrastructure is built around that one," theballaam96 added.
Further details shared on the project's Discord server elaborated on this stance. The team highlighted that their project is backed by individuals with over a decade of experience tinkering with Donkey Kong 64's code, contrasting this with development that "heavily lean[s] on AI vibe code." They believe this AI-centric approach is leading to a low-quality project that will become increasingly difficult to manage over time.
"Vibe coding," a process where developers instruct AI tools to generate code and then refine it with further AI assistance, has become a growing trend in some game recompilation projects. The PC Gaming Wiki has reportedly implemented rules to prevent such AI-assisted projects from flooding its list of recompiled and decompiled games due to concerns about their stability and reliability. As of late June 2026, only Donkey Kong 64: Recompiled is listed on the PC Gaming Wiki's recompilation projects page.
