Doom Composer Mick Gordon Open to Returning to the Series

Mick Gordon, the composer renowned for his work on the acclaimed soundtracks of Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal, has stated that he would return to the series "in a heartbeat" if the circumstances were right. Gordon shared this sentiment during an interview at PAX Australia, suggesting his musical involvement with the iconic shooter franchise may not be definitively over.

Despite a public falling-out with Doom Eternal's development team following the game's release, Gordon indicated a willingness to explore future installments. He noted that "a lot of dominoes" would need to align for this to happen, without specifying the exact nature of these prerequisites. This openness comes despite previous accusations from Gordon in a 2022 Medium post that id Software, the developer of Doom, failed to pay him for a significant portion of his work on the Doom Eternal soundtrack and alleged an abusive working relationship with executive producer Marty Stratton.

Gordon also shared that he had "a whole list of ideas where I wanted to go with Doom" and would "love to explore that one day, for sure." The future of the Doom series itself remains uncertain, particularly in light of recent layoffs at id Software that impacted 136 employees following Microsoft's Xbox business adjustments. Lead services programmer Chris Hays commented that continuing to produce AAA games like Doom with reduced staff would be "impossible."

In the interim, Gordon has been engaged with other projects. He contributed the theme music for the final boss fight in the upcoming Warhammer 40K: Boltgun 2, slated for release on October 14. He is also producing the full soundtrack for Defect, a cyberpunk shooter developed by industry veterans. Additionally, Gordon is scheduled to perform the music he composed for Doom and Doom Eternal live with a full band for the first time at the UK's RAD RADAR music festival in 2027.
