A recent project has demonstrated that the iconic 1993 shooter Doom can be played on a Canon EOS 550D digital SLR camera. This achievement was made possible by a module developed by Github user Lauris-nl, which integrates with the open-source Magic Lantern firmware. The Canon EOS 550D, also known as the Rebel T2i, was originally released in 2010.
According to the report, the camera's internal image processing hardware is sufficiently capable of running Doom at a stable frame rate. The camera's existing controls, including its radial dial and 'Set' button, have been repurposed to handle the game's input. The directional buttons on the radial control allow for movement, while the 'Set' button functions as both the select and fire action. The 'Menu' button accesses the game's menu.
Lauris-nl has cautioned that this port is specifically designed for the Canon EOS 550D and advises against attempting to install it on other camera models or using versions of Canon firmware other than 1.0.9, citing potential for damage to the device. For those with a compatible camera, the process involves transferring a specific Magic Lantern build to an SD card, copying the custom module, and then adding compatible Doom .wad files to a designated folder.
The Github repository does not include commercial Doom files, but the developer suggests that Doom, Doom II, and Final Doom: TNT Evilution are among the compatible titles. However, Heretic, Hexen, Strife, and Doom64 are not supported.
