A new mod for Doom source ports Zandronum and UZDoom aims to radically alter the game's iconic fast-paced action into a slow, methodical tactical shooter. Titled 'Blackout,' this work-in-progress mod, created by modder PKmX, focuses on "tactical military simulation-based gameplay that focuses on slow methodical clearing," emphasizing player survival through cover utilization and proper breaching techniques.
The gameplay alterations in Blackout are significant. Movement speed is drastically reduced, and the player character is considerably more fragile. Weapons are redesigned to mimic real-life firearms, featuring aiming down sights (ADS) and reloading mechanics, with damage and recoil calibrated to reflect their actual characteristics. Classic Doom monsters still populate the game, but their behaviors have been adjusted for the tactical environment; they are deadlier, take longer to attack, and can both suppress players and be suppressed themselves.
A stealth and awareness system is also implemented, where gunfire attracts enemy attention, while remaining undetected may allow players to bypass encounters. In action, Blackout reportedly draws comparisons to games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. due to its deliberate pacing and reactive combat.
Surprisingly, the primary inspiration cited by PKmX is not a tactical shooter but Crysis. Blackout incorporates an energy suit inspired by Crytek's nanosuit, granting players a damage-absorbing energy shield and an "adrenaline system" that provides a speed boost when near death. The suit also features a cloaking device that renders the player temporarily almost undetectable to enemies.
Despite the tactical shift, Blackout aims to maintain a focus on action rather than becoming an "inventory simulator," as confirmed by the modder in response to player queries. Those interested in experiencing this tactical reimagining of Doom can download the playable alpha version from the Doomworld forums. PKmX also suggests complementary mods, such as a palette mod to darken the game's levels, to further enhance Blackout's grim atmosphere.
