A standard morning routine of brewing coffee has been reimagined by a Reddit user who has managed to run id Software's iconic 1993 first-person shooter, Doom, on a Fellow Espresso Series 1 coffee machine. The user, posting under the handle FullExtraction, demonstrated how the machine's brew button can be used for movement and the steam button for firing.
The device's scroll wheel facilitates turning the player character, Doomguy, left or right within the game's environment. A wider-angle video shared by the user showcases Doom running on the espresso machine's circular screen, a feat achieved through custom firmware. The game appears to maintain a smooth frame rate in the footage.
Out of the box, the Fellow Espresso Series 1's screen typically displays a user interface for selecting and timing various coffee drinks, such as Americanos, cappuccinos, or espresso shots. However, this modification demonstrates an alternative use for the hardware.
This accomplishment adds the Fellow Espresso Series 1 to a long lineage of unconventional devices capable of running Doom. Previous examples include an Anker smart-charging station, a modified pregnancy test, and even an in-game implementation within Fortnite.
Doom itself is seeing new life with its latest installment, Doom: The Dark Ages, slated for release in May 2025. This follows the earlier expansion, Revelations. The developer, id Software, recently faced mass layoffs, raising questions about the studio's future projects, which were reportedly intended to include a cooperative Doom experience and a new Perfect Dark title.
