id Software's new expansion for Doom: The Dark Ages, titled Revelations, has masterfully addressed criticisms of the base game by reintroducing key mobility mechanics and refining the combat loop. The expansion, released shortly after significant layoffs at id, centers on the Slayer's journey through Hell after being defeated and sent to Purgatory, forcing him to abandon the shield that defined the base game's gameplay.
The shield, while a versatile tool for blocking, parrying, and attacking, was criticized for reducing the Slayer's agility and oversimplifying combat encounters. Revelations removes the shield's central role, introducing the Chain Spear as the primary new mechanic. This tool allows the Slayer to hook onto enemies and environmental geometry, using camera control to propel himself across arenas. This reintroduced mobility is described as immediately more expressive and engaging than the shield's capabilities.
Complementing the Chain Spear, the expansion also brings back Eternal's air dashes. These can now trigger a "perfect dodge," which charges a meter for special spear abilities. The combat strategy shifts to either parrying specific attacks with the spear or evading others with dashes, completely removing the block mechanic. This fusion of Eternal's speed with The Dark Ages' impactful combat creates a more dynamic experience, where players can use the spear to traverse arenas, engage high-ground enemies, and perform ground pounds.
While id Software's initial design for The Dark Ages aimed to streamline combat by focusing on the shield, this move was seen as an overcorrection by many players who missed the complex, high-octane gameplay of previous titles. Revelations offers a solution by allowing players to swap between the spear and shield at any time. Although the shield is no longer mandatory for combat, it is integrated into traversal puzzles that are more engaging than those found in the base game.
As players progress and unlock more abilities for both the spear and shield, the combat can become complex, occasionally leading to input confusion. However, mastering this expanded moveset results in a deep and rewarding gameplay experience. The Revelations expansion, estimated to be 10-12 hours long, is now available and is credited with singlehandedly justifying Doom: The Dark Ages as a concept.
