Doom: The Dark Ages Revelations, the forthcoming campaign DLC for Doom: The Dark Ages, is slated to offer a substantial experience, targeting between 10 and 12 hours of gameplay. Approximately 40% of this content will consist of endgame challenges.

During a recent presentation, Doom director Hugo Martin elaborated on the DLC's narrative and gameplay, emphasizing its role as a "celebration of the Doom games." Revelations will explore the character of the Slayer before he became known by that title, delving into his past as a marine named Flynn Taggart. "We go back in the Nightmare levels and tell some of the Flynn Taggart story," Martin stated. While the developers do not consider the classic Doom novels as part of the modern Doom series canon, they have incorporated popular elements from them, such as the character's name and certain iconic lines. The classic levels featured in Revelations will be modernized, described as "history with the graphics turned up."

These levels are designed as playable, meaningful experiences that players will journey through as memories. The DLC introduces a new weapon, the Chain Spear, which features a grappling hook capable of facilitating numerous aerial maneuvers, reminiscent of the gameplay in Doom Eternal. One such ability allows players to grapple enemies and circle them in the air while attacking. The Chain Spear will also boast unique glory kills and will be essential for survival in the DLC's challenging endgame content.

Master Arenas are specifically highlighted as crucial areas where strategic use of the Chain Spear will be paramount. Players can also anticipate encountering new enemy variants alongside returning foes, including the Archvile, which will summon demons but not resurrect them as in Doom 2. The Ripatorium, Doom's customizable endless arena mode, is also set to receive a significant update for Revelations.

Martin advises players to complete the base Doom: The Dark Ages campaign before diving into Revelations due to its higher base difficulty. The DLC comprises six levels in total, including five playable areas and the Purgatory hub. These environments are designed in a Metroidvania style, allowing players to unlock new areas as they acquire and upgrade abilities throughout their playthrough. Martin described Revelations as "kind of plays like the culmination of 35 years of Doom."

Doom: The Dark Ages Revelations is scheduled for release on July 7 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
