Double Fine founder Tim Schafer has stated that a sequel to the cult classic action-strategy game Brütal Legend is not currently in development. Speaking on Kinda Funny Games Daily, Schafer confirmed that the studio's immediate focus will be on producing "a whole bunch of crazy little weird things," though he expressed openness to revisiting Brütal Legend in the future.

During the appearance, Schafer was directly asked about the possibility of Brütal Legend 2. "We're not working on that now," he replied, adding, "But maybe someday. I mean, there's a lot there to work with."

When the topic of original voice actors like Ozzy Osbourne and Lemmy Kilmister, both deceased, was raised, Schafer suggested that a sequel could feature a new generation of metal artists. He noted that while some iconic figures have passed, others like Rob Halford and Lita Ford remain, and that new talent continually emerges in the metal scene. Schafer also reflected on the original game as a "little time capsule" preserving legendary artists in their prime.

Double Fine recently regained independence after being a subsidiary of Xbox Game Studios from June 2019 until July 2026. This move followed Xbox's announcement of divesting from several independent studios. Following the separation, Double Fine laid off 23 developers but has since reclaimed the rights to all its intellectual property and is charting a new course.

In the short term, Double Fine is prioritizing updates for its game Kiln and preparing for Amnesia Fortnight 2026 - Indie Reboot Kickstarter. The Kickstarter will fund a game jam event and a documentary, with one game developed during the jam potentially becoming an officially released title.

The original Brütal Legend remains accessible on PC and is backward compatible on Xbox One and Xbox Series X through its Xbox 360 version. It is also available within the Xbox Game Pass Premium catalog.
