Double Fine Productions has announced its return to the Amnesia Fortnight game jam format, which will be livestreamed to Kickstarter backers. The event, scheduled to begin on August 31 and run through most of September, will allow backers to vote on which of the studio's presented game ideas will be developed into prototypes, and ultimately, which one will become a small, released game. This initiative marks a significant step for the freshly independent studio as it regroups following its departure from Xbox.
In addition to the game selection process, 2 Player Productions will be on-site filming the entire event. This footage will be used to create a new documentary, following in the footsteps of previous acclaimed series like "Double Fine Adventure" and "PsychOdyssey." These past documentaries were noted for their candid portrayal of game development at Double Fine, covering the creation of titles such as "Broken Age" and "Psychonauts 2."
The Amnesia Fortnight event serves as a positive development for Double Fine after a challenging summer. In early July, the studio was among those affected by Xbox's extensive restructure, leading to its re-establishment as an independent entity. While Double Fine retained its intellectual property and game catalog, the transition also resulted in layoffs. The upcoming game jam and documentary represent the studio's efforts to move forward and reorient its development pipeline with community involvement.
