Bandai Namco has provided the first glimpse into Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 with a gameplay reveal that highlights new combat features. The core beat-'em-up action familiar to fans of the series remains, but significant changes to how transformations function have sparked discussion among the Dragon Ball community. In Xenoverse 3, the Ki meter from previous titles has been replaced by a cooldown system for abilities. Ki now acts as a stamina gauge that replenishes over time. Transformations, such as Super Saiyan or Kaioken, are no longer available from the outset of a mission. Instead, players must build up their power to charge an "Awakening" meter before they can activate these enhanced states.

This shift has led some players to believe that transformations are now limited by a timer. However, close inspection of the gameplay footage suggests this may not be the case. The transformation icon displays artwork that evolves, potentially indicating a progression through different forms rather than a strict time limit. Unlike previous installments where transformations could be sustained as long as Ki energy permitted, and items could extend their duration, Xenoverse 3's system appears to necessitate a more strategic approach to activating and maintaining power-ups. The gameplay shown has not yet featured a character reverting to their base form after a timer expires, nor has being knocked out by a boss canceled a transformation, leaving room for further clarification.

Beyond transformations, Xenoverse 3 introduces other new mechanics. "Soul Assist" allows players to call upon legendary Dragon Ball warriors like Piccolo or Krillin to utilize their signature abilities in battle. Additionally, "Soul Change" enables players to temporarily embody these characters and wield their full strength. Certain characters, like Trunks and Vegeta, will feature faster cooldown timers for their unique skills. Each playable race will also have its own distinct transformation, with Saiyan, Human, and Majin races confirmed so far. Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 is set to launch in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, taking place over 300 years after the conclusion of the main Dragon Ball narrative.
