Dragon Quest Creator Yuji Horii Creates New Game in Under an Hour Using AI

Yuji Horii, the creator of the venerable Dragon Quest franchise, recently demonstrated the capabilities of artificial intelligence by developing and releasing a browser-based video game in less than an hour using Anthropic's Claude AI tool. This rapid development cycle has drawn attention and some criticism, but Horii himself expressed significant admiration for AI's potential to streamline the game creation process.

Horii highlighted the stark contrast between this recent project and his early work on 1983's The Portopia Serial Murder Case. Four decades ago, creating a game involved conceiving a story, designing art, and writing code, a process that could span months or even years. In contrast, he was able to prompt an AI and generate a playable game in approximately 30 minutes.

The game created by Horii places players in an interrogation room. The objective is to question a subject, present evidence, and corner them into admitting guilt before time expires or they cease cooperating. While a relatively short experience, it offers a crime-mystery gameplay loop that Horii believes would appeal to fans of the genre.

Square Enix, the publisher behind Dragon Quest, has been increasingly vocal about integrating AI into its operations. The company has indicated plans to delegate a significant portion of quality assurance and troubleshooting tasks to AI systems. Furthermore, Square Enix has explored AI's application in enhancing text-based adventure games, as seen with their AI tech preview of The Portopia Serial Murder Case.

AI's growing presence in the video game industry has been a focal point of discussion, particularly concerning its impact on employment. The push for AI integration to boost efficiency and reduce costs has coincided with numerous layoffs across the sector. Companies like EA have openly encouraged AI adoption for increased productivity, while Epic Games has directed its employees to utilize AI for coding, aiming to accelerate the production of games. This directive from Epic Games came shortly after the announced delay of a crossover title featuring Star Wars and Marvel.

The Dragon Quest series boasts a dedicated fanbase that has long cherished the intricate fantasy worlds brought to life by human creativity, with contributions from figures like Horii and Akira Toriyama, who was responsible for character design. As AI-generated games become more prevalent, it remains to be seen whether these titles will garner the same level of appreciation from players accustomed to the craftsmanship of human developers.
