Developers working on Dragon's Dogma 2's upcoming Dark Arisen expansion have shared insights into how player preferences vary significantly between Western and Japanese audiences. Game producers Naoto Oyama and Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, along with director Kento Kinoshita, explained in an interview with Famitsu that this divergence in player desires presents a unique challenge for game design.
"The requests differed greatly depending on the region; the requests in Japan and overseas regions were diametrically opposed," Hirabayashi stated. He noted that by categorizing and ranking player comments, it became clear that feedback from Japan and overseas regions often presented directly opposing viewpoints, highlighting cultural differences in how people engage with games.
One specific area where these differences manifest is in the game's "inconveniences," such as limited fast travel options and strict NPC routines that can penalize players for quest delays. While Western players have come to embrace these elements, often referring to them as "friction" and finding them enjoyable, Japanese players reportedly have less enthusiasm for such features.
Hirabayashi acknowledged that there are players in both regions who appreciate both approaches, but emphasized that the overall proportion of players favoring each style differs. This understanding has led the development team to carefully consider whether any given feature aligns with Dragon's Dogma's core identity rather than strictly adhering to feedback from a single demographic.
The developers clarified that intentional friction is not considered a fundamental aspect of the sequel's identity. Instead, the focus is on the sense of accomplishment players gain from overcoming challenges. Nonetheless, Capcom aims to provide players with choices where feasible.
In line with this philosophy, the Dark Arisen expansion will include options to disable weapon and character customization. Hard Mode will also be available from the expansion's launch day.
Dark Arisen is positioned as a relaunch for Dragon's Dogma 2, introducing significant overhauls to several mechanics that were points of contention in the original game. These updates follow a series of patches that refined underlying systems and incorporated player-requested features from the initial release.
Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen is scheduled to launch on October 9 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. A version for the Nintendo Switch 2, bundled with the base game and the expansion, will also be released on the same day.
