Dragon's Dogma 2 is set to receive an expansion later this year titled Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, which will introduce a new region and arrive on the Nintendo Switch 2. The reappearance of the 'Dark Arisen' subtitle, previously used for an expanded version of the original Dragon's Dogma, was not an initial plan, according to producer Naoto Oyama. The development team decided on the title after the content of the expansion was finalized.

Oyama outlined three primary reasons for the choice. The first reason cited is the subtitle's strong connection to the narrative unfolding in the Norgan area. The story begins with the resurgence of a cursed dragon, and a new Arisen emerges in response, making the 'Dark Arisen' a literal character within the expansion.

The second justification relates to the inclusion of a loop-based gameplay cycle, reminiscent of the original Dark Arisen. While the initial game featured dungeon crawling on Bitterblack Isle, Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen will introduce a new 'Relic Exhibition Cycle' set within the open field. This system appears to emphasize the collection of rare equipment as a key progression mechanic for players in the new region.

Lastly, Oyama acknowledged that the third reason is the most straightforward: familiarity. Using a known subtitle was the most efficient way to communicate the nature of the new content players could anticipate. Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen is scheduled for release on October 9 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with the expansion also debuting on Switch 2 on the same date.
