Dragon's Dogma 2 director Kenta Kinoshita has addressed the addition of the Eternal Ferrystone, an item that allows for unlimited fast travel to any Portcrystal. Despite acknowledging the game's originally challenging travel mechanics, he maintains that the new item does not detract from the game's core design philosophy. Kinoshita explained in an interview with Eurogamer that the Eternal Ferrystone provides players with a third option for traversal, complementing the existing methods of walking and using ox carts.
"I feel that we're not forcing anyone to fast travel anywhere; we're just giving those who wish to take that option an alternative—even if they don't use it every time," Kinoshita stated. He noted that players may find certain journeys repetitive and that real-world time constraints can make extended travel feel lengthy. The Eternal Ferrystone, he suggests, offers a solution for those instances.
Kinoshita further elaborated on the player's agency, asserting that the choice to embrace a more high-verisimilitude experience of traversing the world on foot, or to engage with the risks of ox cart travel, remains entirely available. "It's just you now have a third option," he reiterated. This approach, according to Kinoshita, represents the ideal implementation of quality-of-life improvements: enhancing player possibilities without negatively impacting the original experience.
However, some perspectives suggest that the very presence of a more convenient option can influence player behavior, potentially disincentivizing the use of slower, more deliberate travel methods. The Eternal Ferrystone, obtainable relatively early in the game during the Seat of the Sovran quest, offers an unlimited fast travel capability long before players might typically need such an expediency. This early availability, some argue, could diminish the impact of the game's intended journey-focused design.
