Capcom is implementing changes to Dragon's Dogma 2's "Dragonsplague" mechanic, an in-game affliction that can enhance Pawn combat abilities but also lead to catastrophic village destruction if left unchecked. The developer aims to make the mechanic more understandable and align it with its initial design intentions in an upcoming update, Title Update 3.2, scheduled for release in late August.

Dragonsplague, an insidious condition that spreads among player-controlled Pawns, has been a point of contention since the game's release. While it can boost a Pawn's effectiveness in battle, its untreated progression can result in the death of non-player characters, drastically altering the game world. Previous updates introduced some adjustments, such as more visible symptoms and natural Pawn recovery in casual modes, but producer Naoto Oyama noted that "several challenges needed to be addressed."

Oyama explained that the positive effects of Dragonsplague were not being clearly communicated to players, and options for managing the condition were limited. "While the Dragonsplague can enhance Pawn's abilities," he stated, "those positive aspects were not being communicated clearly enough to players. In addition, even when players noticed that their Pawn is afflicted, there were limited options available for dealing with the condition."

To rectify this, Title Update 3.2 will introduce a new item, the Dragonsbaulk Draught, which offers an outright cure for the affliction. Additionally, the update will provide new combat upgrades for afflicted Pawns, including the ability to temporarily stun larger enemies by targeting their legs or to strike smaller foes without expending stamina. These adjustments are intended to allow players to "more clearly understand and enjoy the strategic decisions we originally envisioned," according to Oyama. Players will now have the choice to either leverage the combat benefits of an afflicted Pawn or utilize the new item to cure the condition.

The changes signal a shift from what some players perceived as a deliberately punitive and opaque system towards a more manageable and strategic RPG status effect. The upcoming update precedes the release of the Dark Arisen expansion on October 9th.
