Alliance Arts, the developer behind the upcoming anime-themed Russian roulette game Drunken Goddess Reflux, has canceled the game's public demo out of concern that its content could be quickly replicated using generative AI. The studio announced the change of plans citing fears that "the demo's content could be used to quickly imitate or replicate the game's presentation and gameplay with AI or other tools, and that such works could be released before our launch."
Instead of a public demo, Alliance Arts will conduct closed online play sessions for a limited number of players. Feedback will be collected through the game's official Discord server. The developer also expressed concerns about its ability to manage restrictions on streaming and posting content from the game.
The studio's worries are not unfounded, as the gaming industry has increasingly seen a rise in copycat titles, a problem exacerbated by advancements in AI technology. The game Needle in a Haystack, which went viral for its intentionally tedious "find a needle in a haystack" gameplay, reportedly spawned several similar titles released on Steam within weeks of its announcement. These AI-assisted clones often feature rapid development times, near-identical gameplay, and distinct visual styles, such as a telltale yellow filter, suggesting significant AI involvement.
With tools like Claude 5.5 capable of decompiling games into playable browser code, the potential for a bad actor to use a demo to create a direct clone for sale on platforms like Steam is a tangible threat. This issue extends beyond Steam, as seen with the multiplayer game Meccha Chameleon, which also faced a wave of copycat games after its release.
The cancellation of the Drunken Goddess Reflux demo comes shortly before Steam Next Fest, an event that often features a large volume of game demos. While the game is currently among the top 100 most-wishlisted titles on Steam, indicating significant player interest, the demo's absence from the festival might have lessened its visibility.
Drunken Goddess Reflux, which combines themes of alcohol consumption with a demonic Tsundere anime character and the game of Russian roulette, is scheduled to launch on December 8 for PC. The gameplay loop involves taking shots, with the player's level of intoxication influencing their chances in the deadly game.
