A now-deleted blog post from Roll20 has seemingly leaked an impending announcement for a major Dungeons & Dragons crossover with World of Warcraft. The post, first reported by EN World, reportedly announced that preorders for "D&D World of Warcraft" were live, accompanied by promotional artwork depicting the logos of both franchises. While the post was quickly removed, screenshots and cached versions of the artwork were briefly accessible.
Neither Wizards of the Coast, the publisher of Dungeons & Dragons, nor Blizzard Entertainment, the developer of World of Warcraft, have officially confirmed the project. The nature of the crossover remains unclear, but the apparent leak surfaces less than a week before Gen Con, a major tabletop gaming convention where D&D is expected to share details about its future plans during a keynote presentation on July 30.
This potential collaboration would mark Warcraft's first significant entry into the tabletop role-playing game space in over two decades. The franchise previously had tabletop adaptations, Warcraft: The Roleplaying Game and World of Warcraft: The Roleplaying Game, released in the early 2000s using D&D's third and 3.5 editions rulesets, respectively. Those were published by White Wolf's Sword & Sorcery Studios.
Dungeons & Dragons' 5th Edition has previously incorporated licensed properties through products like starter sets based on Stranger Things and Rick and Morty. It has also seen crossovers with Magic: The Gathering, another Wizards of the Coast property, in the form of sourcebooks like Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica and Strixhaven: Curriculum of Chaos. However, these Magic crossovers stayed within the Wizards of the Coast ecosystem.
The reported World of Warcraft collaboration suggests D&D may be adopting a crossover strategy similar to Magic: The Gathering's Universes Beyond initiative, which has featured collaborations with franchises such as The Lord of the Rings and Marvel Comics. While the Universes Beyond approach has faced some internal debate among Magic fans, many of its successful sets have aligned with fantasy themes that resonate with the core Magic multiverse. The high-fantasy setting of World of Warcraft would appear to be a natural fit for Dungeons & Dragons.
Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks indicated in a May interview with Games Radar that more D&D crossovers were planned, stating that the D&D system is "very open-ended" and possesses the "DNA for it handled inside the system" to accommodate a wide spectrum of content, much like its existing offerings ranging from Spelljammer to Curse of Strahd.
Details remain scarce, with Roll20's deleted post offering little more than a title and the indication that preorders were intended. Further information about the "D&D World of Warcraft" project is anticipated following Gen Con's commencement on Thursday.
