Wizards of the Coast has announced that Dungeons & Dragons will revisit its most challenging setting, Dark Sun, with a new product line slated for 2027. This initiative, revealed at the D&D Vision Keynote 2027 during Gen Con, aims to cater to players seeking more mature and hardcore gameplay experiences.
The Dark Sun campaign setting, known for its post-apocalyptic world of Athas where "evil has won" and survival is paramount, has historically been controversial due to themes like rampant slavery. Previous iterations have often seen these darker elements softened. However, a teaser trailer presented at Gen Con, complete with graphic violence and gore, alongside a mature content warning, signals a return to the setting's unvarnished brutality. Artwork and discussions at the event confirmed that Athas remains a desolate world devastated by a magical catastrophe, ruled by immortal sorcerer-kings over isolated city-states.
Dark Sun will be the focal point of D&D's "Season of Survival" in 2027, with three core releases planned. "Edge of Oblivion" will serve as a campaign sourcebook for Dungeon Masters, while "Blood and Power" will offer player-focused content and rules. A limited edition of the 5.5 edition Player's Handbook, featuring exclusive Dark Sun artwork, will also be available, providing a grittier aesthetic compared to the standard edition. This release will introduce the Psion as a new character class, bringing psionics back as a core game mechanic outside of subclasses and feats.
The D&D team emphasized a commitment to serving diverse player preferences, and the return to Dark Sun signifies an acknowledgment of player requests for more mature content. This push for darker fantasy themes extends beyond Athas; actor Joe Manganiello also unveiled his homebrew campaign setting, "Death Saves," now an official D&D product inspired by his personal gaming experiences and clothing line, boasting heavy metal and dark fantasy influences.
While the return of Dark Sun promises a more intense experience, the developers aim to honor the setting's original intent. The Dark Sun world was initially conceived as a cautionary tale about the dangers of environmental exploitation and the unchecked accumulation of power, themes that resonate with its grim portrayal of Athas.
