Wizards of the Coast is releasing Arcana Unleashed this September, a new high-magic focused product for Dungeons & Dragons that marks the return of large-scale adventure campaigns, a hallmark of the previous 5th edition. This release also serves as a significant testing ground for D&D 5.5e, which has primarily focused on campaign settings and shorter adventures since its inception.

Arcana Unleashed is designed to immerse players in a world of powerful spellcasting, evolving magic items, and arcane factions. The core book introduces a wealth of new content, including eight new and revised subclasses inspired by potent arcane traditions, 33 new and revised spells, and 19 magical creatures. Players can also look forward to 47 magical items, ranging from evolving relics to legendary artifacts, alongside nine arcane factions and six group patrons. The book also includes Tomb of the Shadow Serpents, a short introductory adventure suitable for one to two sessions, as well as 10 backgrounds and 20 feats tied to the arcane themes.

The centerpiece of the release, particularly for testing the 5.5e system, is Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall. This 128-page adventure is designed for high-level characters, spanning levels 11 to 20, and is set in Thay, a land ruled by the Red Wizards. Despite being roughly half the size of previous major 5e adventures like Curse of Strahd or Rime of the Frostmaiden, Deadfall promises 10 levels of character progression and a lengthy campaign. The adventure is described as a "magical spy thriller" where players must navigate the complex society and politics of Thay, with the ultimate goal of confronting the lich Szass Tam.

Deadfall includes a comprehensive 24-page Thay Gazetteer providing DMs with details on the region's provinces, leadership, and intrigue. It also features 14 new magical items, six high-challenge rating creatures including a stat block for Szass Tam, and five chapters detailing the adventure with over 20 maps. Guidance on running a magical spy thriller and adventures within Thay is also provided.

Arcana Unleashed page spread

The subclasses featured in Arcana Unleashed are expected to be finalized versions of those previously playtested in Unearthed Arcana. Players can get a preview of these new rules in action through the second season of D&D's official actual play show, Dungeon Masters, which began airing on July 8 on the D&D YouTube channel. The show's cast, led by Dungeon Master Jasmine Bhullar, will be engaging with the treacherous Red Wizards of Thay.

While the core Arcana Unleashed book offers a wealth of new options for players and DMs, Deadfall is particularly noteworthy as it represents 5.5e's first substantial attempt at delivering the kind of expansive adventure campaigns that contributed to the immense popularity of the 5th edition. D&D principal game designer Wes Schneider previously indicated that the team is prioritizing player feedback to meet demands, and the return of these large adventures addresses a noted desire from players transitioning to the new edition.

Arcana Unleashed is scheduled for official release on September 15, 2026, with preorders currently open on D&D Beyond. A bundle option is available that includes the Arcana Unleashed Map Pack, and pre-order bonuses include a digital dice set, a play-along pack, and a mini-adventure titled D&D Encounters: Red Wizards’ Gambit.
