Dwarf Fortress, the notoriously complex outpost builder, is set to receive a "meat biome," developer Tarn Adams revealed in a recent forum thread. This new underground addition promises to be a grim landscape composed of "muscle, bone, vertebral walls, sinew, sphincters," according to Adams, also known as Toady One.
The addition was discussed in a "Future of the Fortress" thread on the Bay 12 forums, where Adams fields questions about the game's ongoing development. While a release date has not been provided, Adams indicated that the biome would be subterranean. He also mentioned the possibility of "rivers of blood/fluids" in a future "fluid update," though no new fluids are planned for the immediate future. Resources could be mined from this meat terrain, but Adams confirmed that unlike some fictional entities, regular meat cannot currently be animated, so zombified meat biomes are unlikely.
This development follows recent news about other major updates planned for Dwarf Fortress, including significant changes to the game's magic system and the introduction of a crystal biome. Despite the addition of potentially nightmarish crystal formations, the prospect of a meat biome seems to fit well within Dwarf Fortress's established penchant for detailed and often brutal descriptions of in-game events and injuries.
