Dwarf Fortress is poised to receive its first major Myth and Magic update later this year, introducing procedurally generated magic systems tailored to each unique world. This long-anticipated update, developed over the past decade, aims to deeply integrate magic into the game's core simulation, extending to its generated cosmology and mythology.
Tarn Adams, one of the game's creators, confirmed the impending release in a recent announcement video. The goal for the Myth and Magic update is to move beyond simple spell effects and instead create magic systems that are fundamental to each game world's existence. This approach intends to generate unique magical phenomena and possibilities that arise organically from the simulated universe's creation myths and its underlying structure.
Adams explained that this system will allow players to engage in magical research that feels like genuine discovery, with magic intrinsically linked to how a specific world operates. The update will encompass a wide range of magical elements, including new spell effects, unique magical materials, enchantments, rituals, and the discovery of ancient ruins, all designed to be tied into the fabric of each individual world.
The preview video offered glimpses of this new magic in action. Footage showed a goblin sorcerer teleporting a cat, a dwarven wizard repeatedly blasting a goblin against a wall, and a six-limbed fly-man decimating a group of swordsmen with magical projectiles. The video also depicted a necromancer cursing a dwarf, who then attacked nearby comrades. These demonstrations highlight the emergent and often chaotic nature of the magic players can expect.
The development of this ambitious magic system has necessitated a significant overhaul of the game's scripting, with programmer Putnam contributing to the effort. The Myth and Magic update is slated for release before the end of the year, though a specific launch date has not yet been announced. Dwarf Fortress is currently available on Steam and the Bay 12 Games website.
