Bay12 Games has announced a forthcoming update for its famously complex colony simulator, Dwarf Fortress, titled "Myth and Magic." This update is described as a significant overhaul that will extend to the very "fundamental cosmological makeup of the universe," introducing procedural systems for magic that go far beyond combining simple spell effects. The aim is to create unique magical scenarios that cannot be generated through other means.
According to Bay12 co-founder Tarn Adams, the update will allow distinct forms of sorcery and witchcraft to arise naturally during world generation, developing with the same procedural freedom as rivers and mountains. This aims to provide a more deeply integrated and discovery-driven magical research experience for players, encompassing elements like magical materials, enchantments, rituals, and ancient ruins, alongside more destructive spells.
Adams has indicated that the development of these systems has been underway for many years. The additions are expected to significantly expand upon the game's existing magic system, which has been described as relatively "threadbare" in comparison. The update is slated for release later this year, with a brief announcement video offering glimpses of the new magical capabilities, including a spell that can both harm enemies and manipulate stone. All of these new magical elements will be intrinsically tied to the established rules and nature of each generated universe.
Dwarf Fortress, known for its extreme depth and intricate simulation, has seen considerable growth since its Steam edition launched with a more accessible art style. The game's depth, even before the introduction of this ambitious magic update, has been a subject of discussion, with many of its imitators failing to capture its unique appeal.
