Techland has announced that Dying Light: The Beast will no longer be released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The developer cited the older consoles' lack of processing power and memory as the primary reasons for the decision.
In an update posted on the official Dying Light Twitter account, Techland stated that the game was developed from the ground up to leverage the capabilities of current-generation hardware. The open world, advanced visuals, and fluid combat and traversal mechanics were designed with the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in mind. The studio explained that bringing the game to the previous generation would have necessitated compromises that would detract from the intended experience.
"After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision that Dying Light: The Beast will no longer be released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One," Techland wrote. "Dying Light: The Beast was built from the ground up to take full advantage of current-generation hardware. Its open world, advanced visuals, and fluid combat and traversal all depend on processing power and memory that previous-generation consoles simply cannot provide."
Techland emphasized that this decision was not made to intentionally exclude players on PS4 and Xbox One, but rather reflects the technical realities of development and the studio's commitment to delivering the highest quality experience. Players who had pre-ordered The Beast on either of the canceled platforms will be eligible for a full refund. The developer also expressed regret for any disappointment this news may cause to fans anticipating the game on older hardware.
The cancellation of the PS4 and Xbox One versions also suggests that future installments in the Dying Light series may not target the previous generation of consoles, aligning with industry trends as the lifespan of the PS4 approaches its 13th anniversary.
