EA Announces Major Restructuring: Layoffs, Project Cancellations, and Studio Collaborations

Electronic Arts has announced a series of significant changes affecting its workforce and development slate. The publisher confirmed plans to lay off approximately 400 employees, pause development on an unannounced Sims-related project, and streamline the team working on the Skate reboot.

In a memo to staff, CEO David Tinson and CSO Cam Weber acknowledged the rapidly changing industry landscape and increasing competition. "Today, we're the number one publisher in Western HD gaming," they stated, but emphasized the need to adapt to evolving player choices and market opportunities.

The company is also reconfiguring its development priorities. This includes fostering closer collaboration between its Respawn and DICE studios on a future project. While specifics remain undisclosed, this move has fueled speculation about potential new entries in popular franchises.

Development on a Sims-related title, internally codenamed "Project Lotus," has been paused. EA cited a desire to give "the team more time to reach the full potential and vision for the game" while prioritizing "Project Evergreen." The early access Skate reboot (skate.) will see its development team restructured into a smaller, more focused unit despite its reported success.

Looking ahead, EA intends to concentrate its efforts on fewer large-scale projects in the action-adventure space. Games like the Marvel's Iron Man title and a potential third Star Wars Jedi game are reportedly unaffected. The publisher also reaffirmed its commitment to live service titles such as Apex Legends and the Battlefield series, following the success of Battlefield 6.

EA Sports remains a key focus, with continued support for FC and other sports simulations. The company also teased two new upcoming projects: the return of the Fight Night series and "Project Gridiron," described as a new, social-first open-world experience for its American Football division.

EA stated that these decisions, while difficult, are intended to support the company's future growth. They also committed to providing support for affected employees in finding new opportunities within EA, promising to treat departing colleagues with care and respect.

These organizational changes come after a period of significant financial activity, including the summer acquisition of EA by a group of investment firms led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund in a deal valued at approximately $55 billion.
