Ed Boon, co-creator of the Mortal Kombat franchise, has sparked discussion within the fighting game community by initiating polls on X/Twitter to gather fan input on potential future game titles. This comes at a time when the series' latest entry, Mortal Kombat 1, has concluded its content updates.
Boon confirmed in May 2026 that another Mortal Kombat game was in development. Since then, information has been scarce until these recent polls. On November 6, 2026, Boon posted two polls to gauge player preferences. The first asked participants to choose a name for the next Mortal Kombat game, offering "Mortal Kombat 13," "Mortal Kombat 12," and "Mortal Kombat 2" as options. "Mortal Kombat 2" was leading in votes at the time of reporting.
The second poll presented a hypothetical scenario involving Marvel fighting games, asking fans whether they would prefer "Marvel Tokon 2 by Arc System Works" or "Marvel vs Capcom 4." The majority of respondents favored "Marvel vs Capcom 4."
These queries emerge amidst persistent rumors surrounding the next Injustice game, which NetherRealm Studios is also developing. While Boon previously refuted claims in September that NetherRealm was testing Injustice 3, Mortal Kombat 13, or Mortal Kombat 9, he acknowledged that a lack of external testing does not preclude a game from being in development.
The Mortal Kombat series recently ended support for new content in May 2025. Meanwhile, discussions about potential crossovers continue, with the cast of the Street Fighter movie expressing interest in a Mortal Kombat crossover film. Boon himself has indicated a preference for a Street Fighter x Mortal Kombat game over a movie adaptation.
