NetherRealm development chief Ed Boon has addressed circulating rumors concerning the studio’s next project, including persistent reports suggesting that Injustice 3 is in development. These rumors have been ongoing for years, with recent unearthing of evidence pointing to Supergirl and Batwoman as potential playable characters in the unannounced title.
Boon's recent activity on social media has only fueled further speculation. He initially responded to a satirical post about NetherRealm collaborating with Insomniac on an "AAAA" fighting game, stating, "100% false. Next rumor please.... ;)" Subsequently, when presented with a cluster of rumors that NetherRealm was actively testing Injustice 3, Mortal Kombat 13, and/or Mortal Kombat 9, Boon replied, "All false."
While some interpreted this as a denial of Injustice 3's existence, Boon later clarified his statement. In response to a fan’s inquiry, he explained, "Appreciate the interest & enthusiasm. But just because a game isn’t currently being tested externally doesn’t necessarily mean the game isn’t in development." This suggests that while Injustice 3 might not be undergoing external testing at this moment, it could still be in active development.
This exchange leaves fans in a familiar position, awaiting an official announcement for Injustice 3, potentially at The Game Awards in December. It is also possible that NetherRealm's next project, while perhaps related to the Injustice series or the broader DC Universe, could operate under a different name or herald a new DC fighting game franchise. DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have previously indicated that new DC Universe games are a few years away and that they are involved in the early stages of development at studios like NetherRealm.
However, given Boon's history of social media engagement and trolling, it remains a possibility that his comments are part of a larger misdirection. The most straightforward interpretation, however, is that NetherRealm's next game is indeed Injustice 3, and an announcement may be forthcoming.
