Fans of The Elder Scrolls series are engaged in fervent speculation regarding the title of the long-awaited sixth installment, following a recent cryptic post from an Xbox executive. Asha Sharma, Xbox's new boss, shared her experience playing the game on X, referring to it as "The Elder Scrolls VI: ********" and praising its "scale and grandeur."
This post, echoed by Bethesda's official X account with a similar eight-asterisk placeholder, has fueled numerous fan theories. The most prominent suggestion, as reported by IGN, is "The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel." This theory gains traction because "Sentinel" contains eight letters, matching the asterisks, and it refers to a significant Redguard city within Hammerfell, a region widely believed to be the game's setting. Other eight-letter possibilities, such as "Dominion" and "Balfiera," have also been mentioned.
Further adding to the intrigue, a theory suggests that the game's title may have been subtly hinted at in Bethesda's previous title, Starfield. Within Starfield's character creation, a specific employee number for an ARGOS character reportedly spells out a coded version of "SENTINEL." While this could be a coincidence or a specific Easter egg for Starfield, the connection to Sentinel, a major port city in Hammerfell, has not been lost on fans.
Michael Kirkbride, a former Bethesda developer, reportedly fanned the flames of speculation by replying with a simple "Yep" to a Reddit post discussing the "Sentinel" theory, which some interpret as a confirmation.
Even former industry figures have joined in the speculation. One writer confessed to a long-standing practice of intentionally referencing "Hammerfell" as the game's title in articles over the past 15 years, partly out of spite for past grievances with Bethesda and partly to see if they could influence perceptions. This admission suggests that "Hammerfell" might have been a working title at some point.
Despite these theories, The Elder Scrolls VI is reportedly still at least two years away from release. The recent public speculation follows a period of significant layoffs across Microsoft's gaming divisions.
