Empulse, the new early-access arena shooter from 1047 Games, the developers behind Splitgate, offers a fast-paced 6v6 experience for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. Touted as a spiritual successor to Titanfall 2, the game emphasizes high-speed movement, strategic use of abilities, and the deployment of large mechs. Success in Empulse hinges on mastering its core mechanics, from efficient traversal to tactical combat.
Movement is paramount in Empulse. The game's arena maps and loadout system may resemble Call of Duty, but its core design revolves around constant motion. Players are encouraged to utilize paint grenades for speed and jump boosts, employ grapple hooks for rapid repositioning, and engage in wall-running to traverse environments. Failing to maintain momentum and chain abilities can leave players vulnerable and force frequent respawns.
Paint grenades serve a crucial role, each designated by a color that indicates its effect. Orange grenades provide a speed boost, while blue grenades enhance jump height. Both are valuable for increasing player mobility. Green grenades offer healing, yellow grenades slow down opponents, and red grenades are explosive.
Mechs are a significant feature in Empulse, offering a substantial advantage with their high health pools of 1,500 HP. While formidable, mechs can be efficiently dealt with. The sledgehammer melee weapon, when used up close after a sprint or grapple, can quickly deplete a mech's health. Players who successfully land a grapple on an enemy and reach them are rewarded with a one-hit knockout melee attack.
Mech combat strategy involves aggression, as mechs do not regenerate health. Players should aim to deploy them effectively and consider bailing out before they explode. Exiting a mech just before it self-destructs allows the player to emerge with full health, enabling surprise attacks on nearby enemies.
Player progression in Empulse includes earning XP through various game modes. Selecting multiple game modes in the quick play playlist can provide a small XP boost, aiding in leveling up and unlocking new weapons and perks. Each weapon also has its own leveling system, unlocking attachments and weapon skins. Upon maxing out a weapon's level, players can undertake mastery gigs to earn exclusive cosmetic rewards.
While aiming down sights (ADS) offers a limited zoom, it does not impact bullet spread or accuracy. Empulse's combat system allows for effective hip-firing, similar to older Halo titles, meaning players can engage targets effectively without precise aiming.
Exploiting verticality is another key strategy. Players can achieve significant height by chaining momentum, grapple points, and wall-running, enabling them to attack enemies from above. This aerial advantage is effective as opponents often take time to look upward in first-person shooters.
