LA-based developer Studio Lifeforms has revealed Etre, an upcoming action-adventure game that boasts a striking and unique art style. Set on Orbis, described as a "planet-scale alien mind on the brink of awakening," the game follows a protagonist named Xyle as he searches for his soulmate, Atel.
Studio Lifeforms states that Etre's distinctive visuals are inspired by graphic novels from the 1970s and 1980s. The resulting aesthetic draws comparisons to games like Rez and Tetris Effect, but Etre applies its style to a more grounded gameplay experience. The developer cites Remedy's Control as a primary influence on Etre's mechanics, promising a narrative-driven experience with semi-open world exploration where player actions shape the story. Combat is designed to be heavily movement-based, featuring enemies such as environmental anomalies and "living geometry."
While the game's visual presentation is a significant draw, the combat shown in early footage appears somewhat underdeveloped. The success of Control was partly due to its satisfying blend of a bizarre setting and impactful combat, and Etre will need to deliver a similar tactile experience to complement its art.
Etre does not yet have a release date, but it is anticipated to launch sometime next year.
