EverQuest Legends Expands With New Zones, Races, and a Kunark Expansion

Twenty-seven years after its initial launch, EverQuest Legends is receiving a significant influx of new and returning content. Developer Game Jawn is aiming to recapture the magic of the original EverQuest by reintroducing familiar zones, overhauling itemization, and expanding the playable world with new areas and races. The upcoming "Rulers of Kunark" expansion, slated for December, will bring the continent of Kunark to Legends, a land first introduced in the 2000 expansion "Ruins of Kunark."

Before the major Kunark expansion, players can expect an October update that adds Lake Neriuss and Nektropos Castle. Nektropos Castle, originating from EverQuest 2, will feature high-level content, while Lake Neriuss is designed for lower-level adventurers. This update also introduces the Half-Dark Elf as a playable race, complete with its own starting zone.

The development team is also addressing the game's itemization, which executive producer David Youssefi described as "boring" in its original state. "We had to go back and we had to get the original art assets, the original music, the original spell effects, and sort of reassemble everything," Youssefi stated, emphasizing the effort to preserve and enhance the original game's appeal. New loot tables are being implemented, including for Nektropos Castle, with some inspiration drawn from EverQuest 2 but largely creating a unique experience.

This focus on Nektropos Castle and the Kunark expansion necessitated a delay for another planned fall update, Rujarkian Hills. Initially set for September, Rujarkian Hills has been pushed to 2027 to accommodate the larger content releases. Rujarkian Hills is described as a rugged, orc-populated zone focused on exploration and combat, filling a need for higher-level content.

Lead content designer Eric Wellman highlighted the team's effort to unlock previously inaccessible areas, such as the "Orc Highway" that leads to Rujarkian Hills, a path that has been visible but blocked for 27 years. The addition of Rujarkian Hills aims to provide much-needed experience zones for high-level players.

Developers hope these updates will continue to engage players, some of whom have been with the game since its 1999 launch, by providing a sense of discovery and offering plenty of challenges to overcome.
