Exodus Reveals Redesigned Male Protagonist Amidst Mass Effect Fallout

Archetype has unveiled a redesigned character model for Jun Aslan, the male protagonist of its upcoming Mass Effect-inspired RPG, Exodus. This update follows considerable player feedback on Reddit and other forums, where Jun's original facial features were criticized for appearing "plastic surgery filled" and "uncannily plastic surgery filled."

Early reactions to the redesign, which has been described as a more refined and youthful appearance reminiscent of Leon Kennedy, have been largely positive. "He looks like a dashing space hero instead of a bad go in the character creator, which is perfect," one Reddit user noted. Another poster remarked on the improved facial structure, stating, "the facial structure has really improved."

The timing of this reveal is particularly noteworthy. Exodus is being positioned as a spiritual successor to the dormant Mass Effect series, with former BioWare lead writer Drew Karpyshyn contributing to the game. This announcement comes shortly after EA's confirmation of BioWare's internal studio closure and the apparent cancellation of the next Mass Effect installment. The news has led some players to view Exodus as a continuation of the space opera RPG genre that Mass Effect pioneered.

Fans have directly linked the Exodus reveal to the recent Mass Effect news. "Who is here after watching the leaked Mass Effect Universe trailer?" one Exodus player asked on Reddit, with another commenting, "I purposely watched the Universe trailer first and Exodus last so I'd feel a little better."

"Great timing Archetype!!!" a commenter exclaimed. "This couldn’t have been revealed at a better time with the fallout of BioWare’s closure." The focus on the protagonist's appearance has been a point of contention, but the developers appear to have addressed these concerns with the updated model.

When playing Exodus, players can choose Jun's gender, with customization options including hairstyles, facial hair, and tattoos. While the female version, 'FemJun,' has yet to be shown, Archetype has teased a forthcoming reveal, promising it will be "worth the wait."

Exodus is set to launch on April 7, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC. The game promises a narrative with significant player impact, branching dialogue trees, and a focus on choices that affect the game world.
