Guillaume Broche, director at Sandfall Interactive, acknowledges the challenge of creating follow-up titles after the immense success of their debut game, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The studio's approach, he suggests, might not resonate with everyone in the future, but he remains committed to the creative process that yielded their acclaimed 2025 title.
In a recent interview on the Konbini YouTube channel, Broche stated that the team did not develop Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 with the sole intention of pleasing an audience. Instead, the focus was on creating a game that excited the developers themselves. This internal satisfaction, he believes, was a key factor in the game's widespread appeal and numerous Game of the Year awards. He expressed a similar sentiment regarding future projects, noting, "Maybe people won't like it. That's life."
Despite the significant attention and the inherent pressure to scale up operations or expand the studio following Clair Obscur's success, Broche indicated that such pressures could lead to the creation of games that the development team themselves would not enjoy playing. The studio's core ethos of making games that excite them is something he sees no reason to alter.
While details about Sandfall Interactive's next project remain scarce, Broche hinted at potentially drastic decisions being made. The possibility of a direct sequel to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is uncertain. Broche has previously alluded to "Clair Obscur" being a franchise name, with "Expedition 33" representing a single narrative within that universe. This suggests an anthology-like approach, similar to the Final Fantasy series, where each installment features a new world and characters. A direct sequel would also necessitate the studio choosing a canon ending for the original game, something they have deliberately avoided.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is currently available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows PC.
