A recent video showcasing combat in the upcoming Fable title drew criticism online, with some players noting a perceived lack of enemy reaction to incoming attacks. However, firsthand experience with two different builds of the game at Gamescom indicates that this visual representation may not accurately reflect the final combat mechanics.
During the hands-on sessions, players were equipped with a hammer as their primary melee weapon, complemented by ranged options including a standard bow and a repeater crossbow. The available spells also varied between builds, with one focusing on offensive elemental attacks like fire and lightning, while the other offered crowd-control abilities such as lifting and slamming groups of skeletal enemies. Although the hammer itself felt somewhat cumbersome, the diversity of spells allowed for tactical engagement, often reducing the hammer's role to finishing blows or using charged heavy attacks.
Every enemy encountered, ranging from wisps that summon other undead to various types of skeletons and a boss with a lantern for a skull, demonstrably reacted to player actions. Even during a boss encounter where numerous adds spawned, the player's attacks felt consequential, and the overall combat, including dodging and parrying, was described as responsive, well-timed, and satisfying. While the hands-on experience did not include testing other weapon types beyond the hammer, the sessions provided a more optimistic outlook on the game's combat system.
Fable is currently slated for release on February 23, 2027, and is scheduled to launch on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
