Playground Games is prioritizing significant power increases and unique utility when players discover new loot in the upcoming Fable reboot, eschewing minor statistical improvements.
Creative directors Will Kennedy and Craig Littler explained to GameSpot that the development team's goal is to ensure that loot and equipment feel impactful, offering substantial changes rather than incremental upgrades. "We want our upgrades to be what we call meaningfully meaningful," Kennedy stated. He elaborated that players will encounter upgrades that offer more than a mere percentage point increase in damage. As an example, he cited a weapon spell that initially allows a player to suspend an object in the air, with an upgrade introducing a powerful 'slam' ability that greatly expands the spell's utility and impact.
The studio highlighted that Fable's loot system is designed to integrate deeply with the game's various mechanics. Loadouts will comprise melee weapons, ranged weapons, spells, and abilities. While spells and abilities can be enhanced through a skill tree, weapons will follow their own distinct upgrade paths. Items found in chests are also intended to interact with Fable's systems, including 'baubles' that can influence a player's social standing. Littler mentioned that players might discover items like gifts in chests, which could be used to interact with the game's 'life system' and affect NPCs in the world.
During a hands-on preview at Gamescom, Fable demonstrated its combat system using pre-built loadouts that featured a hammer, various bows, and different types of spells. The game is slated for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on February 23, 2027.
