Fable is now slated for a February 23, 2027 release, with developer Playground Games expressing confidence in meeting this date. The decision to move the game from its previously targeted October launch was a deliberate strategic choice to avoid a congested period, according to RPG director Ralph Fulton.

Speaking at gamescom, Fulton acknowledged the team's initial eagerness to ship the game sooner but ultimately supported the rationale behind the delay. "I feel great about that. I mean, I was really looking forward to shipping this game this year. I didn't want to have to do another January 1st speech to the team about ‘this is the year we ship Fable’, which I'm now going to have to do. But the rationale for it is absolutely sound. I'm glad that we're avoiding that chaotic window."

This marks the first official confirmation that Fable was initially aiming for an October 2026 release. Prior to the announcement of the February date, the game was only known to be launching in "fall" of that year. The move out of October is understandable given the competitive landscape. That month was set to include another Xbox Games Studio title, Gears of War E-Day, alongside the PS5 console exclusive Phantom Blade Zero. This period is further intensified by a packed September slate featuring titles such as Marvel's Wolverine, Control Resonant, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and Silent Hill: Townfall.

While February 2027 also appears to be shaping up to be a busy release month, with games like God of War Laufey, Metro 2039, and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis also slated for release, Fulton remains unfazed by the competition. "People keep saying that to me, but we don't run scared of other big games," Fulton stated. "We're a big game ourselves. We hold ourselves to high standards. I'm happy to go toe-to-toe with a bunch of other games. There's just one that I'm happy to avoid entirely."

That singular title Fulton is keen to avoid is Grand Theft Auto 6. Further details on Fable's gameplay, including impressions of a full quest and combat mechanics, are available in IGN's gamescom previews.
