Fable Reboot's Long Development Protected by Xbox's View of Franchise Vitality

The extended and "protected" development of the Fable reboot has been enabled by Xbox's recognition of the series' significance, according to Playground Games director Ralph Fulton.

Fulton stated in an interview with The Guardian that many within Xbox view Fable as integral to the platform's identity. "I genuinely think Fable is an important game," Fulton said. "What has protected us over a long development cycle is that so many people within Xbox view Fable as vital to the DNA of the platform. I would go a step further and say it's important to video games as a whole. It offers a combination of elements that simply doesn't exist anywhere else."

The Fable reboot was officially announced in 2020, though its development has reportedly been underway since 2016. This marks a departure for Playground Games, previously known for the Forza Horizon racing series. The game is slated for release in 2027, meaning its development will span nearly seven years from its initial announcement.

Despite challenges, including the departure of the game's narrative lead in 2023, development has continued. Fulton highlighted the game's cast, featuring comedic British talent such as Richard Ayoade and Natasia Demetriou. He noted Ayoade's improvisational skills and Demetriou's willingness to add a unique, albeit surprising, element of profanity to her character.

Fulton also emphasized the commitment to a strong narrative conclusion, even with industry data showing lower player completion rates. "It's easy to look at industry metrics saying 100 percent of people start a game and only 25 percent finish, and decide not to invest heavily in the finale," Fulton explained. "But we relentlessly pursued quality here."

He further elaborated that "In great Fable fashion, it culminates in a choice that really challenges you to think about who you are, with a real personal cost to weigh against the outcome."

Fable is scheduled to launch on February 23 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, marking the first time the series will be available on a PlayStation console.
