Fable Reboot Safe From Microsoft Studio Purges, Director Says

Microsoft's recent pattern of studio closures and layoffs has not extended to Playground Games' highly anticipated Fable reboot, which has been in development for a decade. According to Fable director Ralph Fulton, the game's significance to the Xbox brand has shielded it from the same fate as other studios.

In an interview with The Guardian, Fulton stated that Fable is considered "vital to the DNA of the platform" by many within Xbox. This status, he suggests, has protected the long-in-development title. He further elaborated that Fable possesses a unique combination of elements that sets it apart, not just within the Xbox ecosystem but in gaming as a whole. While he believes this broader appeal is important, he acknowledged that its significance to the Xbox brand itself is likely the primary factor ensuring its continued development.

Microsoft has undertaken significant restructuring of its gaming division, leading to the closure of studios such as Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks. These closures, while impactful, did not affect flagship franchises integral to the Xbox identity. Fable, by its long-standing association with the Xbox brand, appears to fall into this protected category.
