The main questline for Playground Games' upcoming Fable title is expected to take approximately 20 hours to complete, according to associate game directors Will Kennedy and Craig Littler. The developers shared this estimate during a Q&A session at gamescom 2026.

Kennedy elaborated that the game will feature "around 15-20 hours of mainline quest gameplay," alongside "around 15-20 of side and open-world exploration content gameplay." This focus on a more contained main story stands in contrast to some contemporary open-world RPGs, which often feature main quests stretching to 50 hours or more, such as Elden Ring, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and Assassin's Creed Valhalla.

For comparison, the original Fable's main quest clocks in at roughly 12 and a half hours, with Fable 2 and Fable 3 slightly longer at 13 and 13 and a half hours, respectively. The upcoming Fable reboot appears poised to be the longest in the series thus far, nearly doubling the story length of its predecessors if the main campaign is extended significantly.

Despite the more focused main quest, developers emphasized that players will still have ample opportunity to immerse themselves in Fable's world. Littler stated that players "can literally play it forever" due to the game's "limitless" life systems, suggesting extensive side content and emergent gameplay possibilities. Completionists in previous Fable titles typically spent around 30 hours in the first game and 50 hours in the second and third games to see all available content, a trend the new installment is expected to follow.

Fable is scheduled for release on February 23, 2027, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The game was first announced in July 2020, and its upcoming launch follows a six-year development period. Xbox Series X/S PC
