The upcoming Fable reboot from Playground Games is set to feature a mainline quest of approximately 15 to 20 hours, according to associate game director Will Kennedy. This estimate aligns with traditional RPG lengths, but Kennedy noted that the game's "life systems" could allow for near-endless playtime.
Kennedy explained in a Q&A session that players can expect around 15 to 20 hours of side and open-world exploration content in addition to the main story. This brings the total for traditional gameplay elements to roughly 30 to 40 hours. However, the depth of Fable's life simulation features, which include interacting with non-player characters, purchasing property, and engaging in criminal activities, offers a potentially infinite amount of content. "The life systems are limitless, so you can play them for as long as you want," Kennedy stated, with fellow associate game director Craig Litter adding, "You can literally play it forever if that's what you want to do."
While any game can theoretically be played indefinitely, the developers suggest that Fable's immersive life simulation elements could rival those of titles like The Sims in terms of player investment and longevity. The reboot will also feature a new character-specific reputation system, replacing the series' previous morality mechanics, though players may be able to circumvent it through wealth.
Playground Games has delayed Fable to 2027 to avoid launching alongside Grand Theft Auto 6.
